A heritage marked by history

A place of art and life marked by time

Although built in the late 19thᵉ century, Forêterie Castle has already lived several lives since its inauguration in 1897 by its builder, Gustave Avice. It was first and foremost a family home that the family enjoyed until it was occupied during the Second World War by German troops, but also a place of residence for artists of the period such as the painter Cormon or the engraver Le Couteux.

When they left Le Mans in June 1944, German forces set fire to the Château de la Forêterie before leaving the premises, destroying a precious piece of heritage. Fortunately, some photographic archives remain.

70 years of sleep

In 2015, François Avice took on the challenge of restoring his grandfather's castle.

Particularly damaged by the terrible fire, the building was then abandoned by the family. It was 70 years later, in 2015, that François Avice, Gustave's great-grandson, embarked on the extraordinary project of restoring what had become known as the "Burnt Castle" to the inhabitants of Allonnes, where the property is located.

An extraordinary renovation project

A story of restoration and return to life

Thanks to the support of the Fondation du Patrimoine and local authorities, its owner has succeeded in making the castle "watertight and airtight", thus renewing the links between the castle and the surrounding area. Events take place in the park, allowing the public to discover or rediscover this treasure of Sarthe's heritage.

A new lease of life for an exceptional location

Between heritage and modernity, the estate is preparing to host the events of tomorrow.

Today, the Château is being reborn with the ambition of developing an activity that will guarantee its sustainability and turn it into a venue for exceptional events. The launch of the events business will thus enable the site to be preserved and, even more importantly, the renovation work to be continued.

When it opens in June 2026, it will initially offer seven rooms, with the remaining rooms undergoing complete renovation during 2027.

The Château de la Forêterie will then become a place steeped in history and encounters, renowned throughout the region.
