The origins of the Château de la Forêterie's renaissance

For a long time, the Château de la Forêterie remained abandoned. Time seemed to have stood still there, leaving behind silence and traces of a suspended past. Here we tell you about the beginning of a patient and deliberate rebirth, born of a simple conviction: a place steeped in history deserves to be experienced, passed on, and shared.

Fifteen years ago, the Château de la Forêterie was still shrouded in silence. The silence of the concrete blocks that had been erected to protect visitors from this ruin, which had become dangerous. Since 1944 and the fire started by the German army, time seemed to have stood still there, suspended between what it had been and what it might never become again.

At that time, the place was no longer home to anything—no voices, no laughter, no activity. Only the scars of abandonment remained: broken windows, collapsed floors, and above all, vegetation that had gradually reclaimed its rights. An invasion that had become spectacular. And the vague impression that a piece of memory was slowly fading away.

A place doomed to disappear

Like many buildings of this kind, the castle could have followed a sadly common path: that of gradual neglect, then abandonment.

There were plenty of reasons: the scale of the work, the time required, the constraints, the uncertainties. Restoring a place of this nature requires much more than material or financial resources. It requires a deep, almost intimate conviction that this heritage still deserves to exist—and above all to be lived in. Because an empty castle, even if restored, is just a shell.

What gives it its true value are the stories. Reviving those in which it played a part, and opening up to new ones.

A bridge between the past and the future

The revival of the site was not decided in a single day, based on a perfectly drawn-up plan. It arose from a different perspective. From a simple realization: allowing this castle to fall into ruin was not an option. Given its advanced state of disrepair and the devastation caused by the fire in 1944, it was not a question of turning back the clock or turning the site into a museum. On the contrary, the challenge was to give it a new lease of life, one that resonates with both its past and, even more so, its future. In other words, to be reborn so that it could once again be occupied, shared, and brought to life.

Learning from the place to better transform it

Even before the work began and technical and aesthetic choices had to be made, it was necessary to take the time to understand the place. To consider the condition of its structure, observe its volumes, its light, its circulation. We needed to understand what the building suggested and what it did not allow. This invisible phase was essential. It enabled us to establish clear principles: respect the soul of the château, preserve its character, never sacrifice meaning for the sake of convenience. We chose slowness over haste. Sobriety over ostentation.

A renaissance that echoes the castle's history

The images of the ruined castle tell a story that goes far beyond its state of disrepair. They remind us that any place, however majestic, is fragile when it ceases to be inhabited.
They also explain why the project we are undertaking today is deeply rooted in the notion of transmission.

Bringing Château de la Forêterie back to life is not just about restoring walls. It is about creating the conditions for it to once again become a place for gatherings, celebrations, and important moments. It is about accepting that its history will continue to be written—with other voices, other journeys, other emotions. It is about choosing to make it a house of stories.

Today, the castle's rebirth is well and truly underway. Since the initial work to clear the rubble in 2016, it has been a long process, undertaken with humility and high standards. Soon, the place will once again be able to welcome stories. The stories of those who have been touched by the unique history of the Château de la Forêterie and who will come here to experience a special moment. This renaissance is only just beginning.
